Upper School Students
At Rowland Hall-St. Mark’s School, teenagers thrive in an environment where challenge is expected, learning is supported, and personal best efforts are celebrated. RHSM’s Upper School curriculum is grounded in a college-preparatory course of study that includes history and the social sciences, ethics and world religions, languages, literature, the arts, the sciences, mathematics, technology, health, and physical education. Students are free to undertake honors or advanced placement work in every academic department, to pursue particular interests in independent senior distinction projects, and to elect courses at other institutions.

Flexibility is built into the Upper School curriculum and schedule so that entering students start where they are, not where a school schedule requires them to be. Teachers and counselors are accessible, interested, and actively involved in helping students succeed by teaching students how to learn in addition to what to learn. All these elements combine to provide a rich and varied academic program which students can adapt to their individual needs and personal aspirations.

RHSM students explore opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and self-expression through student government, competitive athletics, service learning projects, and the arts.

In recent years, more than 80 percent of the Upper School student body has participated on at least one of the school’s 14 interscholastic sports teams. By including every student who wants to participate in the athletics program, RHSM bolsters confidence in the individual. RHSM students enjoy becoming involved in service learning projects contributing to the quality of life of individuals in need while learning empathy and responsibility. The arts program at RHSM is an essential and integral part of every student’s academic life. Students are introduced to the basic elements of the visual and performing arts and offered a broad range of opportunities for personal expression through studio art, drama, dance, and choral and instrumental music.

RHSM devotes substantial time and attention to working with families throughout the college decision-making process. Our full-time director of college counseling guides students and their parents through a step-by-step process intended to direct students to apply to a selection of colleges and universities that fit their particular interests and needs. This is the culmination of a college-preparatory, independent school education. As poised, articulate RHSM graduates anticipate the exciting transition to higher education, they are very well prepared for their next learning adventures.

Imagine the Choices…

Because all RHSM graduates continue their education at four-year colleges and universities, extensive resources are available to help students and their parents make important college decisions. The director of college counseling begins to communicate with parents as early as freshman year, but the formal process of meeting individually with students and their families and working with the class starts in eleventh grade. College admissions representatives visit the Lincoln Street Campus each year and students are given assistance in planning visits to colleges in which they are interested. RHSM’s college counseling director informs and empowers students to apply and select colleges and universities where they will find their “right fit.”

Our students consistently perform well on competitive national examinations and have been recognized annually by the National Merit Scholarship Program. In fact, RHSM seniors have earned the highest number of National Merit Scholarships of any school in Utah for many consecutive years.
