A balanced literacy approach to reading and writing is used that builds on students’ individual abilities and styles. Reading, writing, and phonics are integrated by using a variety of materials and experience based activities.

3 Year Olds
Speaking: Three-year-olds develop skills of oral language, listening, and speaking. They build vocabulary to express ideas and feelings appropriately.
Supporting Emerging Readers: Children develop an awareness of books and authors, learn songs, poetry, and finger plays, are introduced to the library and reading center.
Supporting Emerging Writers: Children use symbols to communicate ideas. They participate in activities to strengthen their small motor skills, and teachers record children’s dictated thoughts.
Foreign Language: Spanish vocabulary is introduced to the children through poems, songs, and interactive games. The goal is for students to develop an "ear" for different speech patterns and sounds, and an interest in languages.

4 Year Olds
Speaking: Students develop and connect oral and written language, listening, and speaking skills, and vocabulary.
Supporting Emerging Readers: Four-year-olds learn songs and poetry, and they take part in shared reading, picture labeling, and group experiences. Supporting Emerging Writers: Children dictate individual and classroom stories, they write in journals, create illustrations, and experience a print-rich environment.
Foreign Language: Spanish vocabulary is introduced to the children through poems, songs, and interactive games.

Kindergarten
Speaking: Oral language and listening skills continue to be developed and vocabularies built. Children concentrate on following directions.
Emerging Readers: Kindergarteners develop an awareness of literature through a variety of literary forms (songs, chants, poetry, big books, rhyming). The are connecting oral and written language, reading independently and in groups, and continuing to learn letter-sound association.
Emerging Writers: Concentration on writing mechanics (name writing, using upper and lower case letters appropriately, using spaces between words). Experiences include journal writing and drawing, book making and picture labeling.
Foreign Language: Spanish vocabulary is introduced to the children through poems, songs, and interactive games.
