Use these when you shop at Barnes & Noble Gateway or Sugarhouse from Tuesday October 14 to Sunday October 19 and RHSM will get a percentage of the sales. Barnes and Noble membership cards may also be used during this event. We will receive credit from books, music, gift items and lattes! So please take a minute to print some of these vouchers and enjoy a shopping spree. There will not be a book fair at the middle school this year so this is a great opportunity for the entire student body, teachers, families and friends to utilize these vouchers and support RHSM. Click here to print vouchers.
Barnes and Noble will be hosting a Book Preview for parents at the Home & School meeting, Tuesday October 14 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the parlor. It is always inspiring and informative to learn what books appeal to our children. Books may also be pre-ordered at this time. We are also delighted to have Author Anne Bowen available for book signing Wednesday October 15 from 3:00-5:30 p.m. Look for her new book I Know An Old Teacher, illustrated by Stephen Gammell. It is about a teacher who takes all of the classroom pets home for a long weekend. Some of her other books include, What do Teachers Do (after you leave school)?, The Great Math Tattle Battle and I Loved You Before You Were Born. Her books are truly entertaining! There will also be a variety of middle school books to choose from.

Self Portraits and Insights into Being Three
Children in Stacy and Beth's 3 PreK class began the year examining their own image in the classroom full-length mirror and then drawing a self-portrait. If children didn't seem to know how to start, they were encouraged to start with drawing their head and refer back to the mirror for pertinent body details. The children will draw self-portraits again in the spring and their drawings will be displayed side-by-side to show developmental progress. Of course, the complexity of drawings depends on a lot of things such as age (younger 3, older 3), previous drawing experience, and how interested they were when asked to draw.
Here is a sampling of the self-portraits and the comments of three of the children as they drew.
Portrait #1:
(Drew the small figure center right.)
"I made it like a spider." (Drew an oval for his own face.)
"I look like an egg. I'm bigger."
Portrait #2:
"This is me when I grow up.
This is my face and these are my bangs-yellow.
I have a ballerina princess at my house.
This is my mama (the figure of the child becomes Mama instead).
I'm drawing me after I'm through.
Me, right here (to the left of Mama).
I'm taller than my mom.
When I grow up I'm going to be taller than my family.
I wanted my hair to be here (mid-back) like Sleeping Beauty.
I'm making a ponytail.
I like pink and I like to eat frosting.
I like white, too."
 Portrait #3:
"First, long legs.
The arms.
That's an ear.
Let me make a bigger nose.
There's my little eyeballs.
My hair's like that.
I had a scary dream in my bed.
It was about monsters.
Fingers.
That's my pinkie.
I have to color in the middle."
 Portrait #4:
"That's a nose.
That's a mouth.
A smiling face.
Curly hair.
That's a body.
Those are fingers,
that's a finger,
that's a finger,
that's a finger."

 Lower School Sports
Anna Ernst is developing an informational binder that contains recreational and sports programs throughout the valley, and specifically, sports teams that RHSM Lower School students are involved in. She would like to have all student teams listed with the coach contacts (home phone, cell, email) as well as the organization.
If you are currently coaching a team with mostly RHSM students, please contact Anna with your information. We also need parent volunteers to coach new teams! Once finalized, the binder will be on the parent resource table by Carol Collard in the LS Main Foyer.

Lower School Science
Mary Slocum, Science Teacher
Birdfeeder: $20 Binoculars: $75 Collection of bird nests: Priceless
This fall, a large bag from a local chocolate shop appeared on my desk. The contents were sweet indeed: two beautiful robin nests!
Over the years, students, parents, grandparents, teachers and friends have donated more than 75 nests to the Lower School Science collection. Many nests are delivered in the fall months. In the spring, birds build nest to incubate eggs and rear their young. Once this activity is completed, the nests are vacated. Most nests are well concealed and the locations are only revealed once foliage clears in the autumn.
When students study our collection, they see the architecture of different nests and the astonishing variety of building materials used by different bird species. Even though there may be variation in nests constructed by birds of the same species, there are certain characteristics that make it possible to identify nests. Some of my personal favorites include a cobweb bound hummingbird nest built on a strand of holiday lights; a hanging nest constructed from fishing line (with hooks intact,) and a flicker nest drilled in a section of tree trunk.
A portion of the collection is on display on the shelves just inside the Lower School Science Room.

 Fall in First Grade
by April Nielsen, First Grade Teacher
The first graders had a great time making their fabulous leaf shirts on Wednesday the 17th with the help of many hard working volunteers. On Tuesday the 23rd, the first graders wore their leaf shirts for our Signs of Fall Walk. We walked to the Miller Bird Refuge and collected signs of fall and appreciated the beautiful autumn weather. Jack A. summed it up when he made a wish on a dandelion seed puff. He said, "I wish today would be a perfect day." Then he blew the seeds and said "My wish came true. It IS a perfect day!" Following the walk, we read Lois Ehlert's Leaf Man picture book. This inspired us to create our own leaf creatures. Our leaf creatures will be on display in the first grade commons for all interested art lovers.

10th Grade Student Wins "Best in Show" and "First Place" at Utah State Fair
Rowland Hall tenth grader Claire Hoffman won 'Best in Show' and 1st Place at the Utah State Fair for her colored pencil drawing of a cougar.
Claire says she draws for fun and enjoys taking private drawing classes in addition to the art classes she has taken at Rowland Hall.
Upper School art teacher Susan Beck said, "Claire does draw very well; this skill stands out in every project she gets involved in. When she executes her work, it can be very accurate in terms of realism but can also have a loose style that makes it expressive. She is a very focused and productive student."

Ninth Grade English Class Gets Creative!
In conjunction with the novel Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, all ninth grade students connected reading with creation and worked on a selection of projects. African fables were interpreted and made into children's picture books, cookbooks containing typical Nigerian recipes were compiled, games, such as Ibopoly: The Game of Ibo Culture, were artfully invented, masks were crafted and maps were rendered. Ms. Keene has been pleased with the creative inventiveness and effort that is evident in the work.
Stop by room B-8 to see these projects on display.

Rowland Hall Cross Country

The Rowland Hall cross-country team has competed in two meets since the previous update. On September 12 the stellar harriers conquered the dusty hills of the Murray Invitational cross-country course. Lead runner Nathan Zick-Smith completed the 3.1-mile race in 18:27 and was followed by fellow varsity teammates Alexander Edgley, Andy Gilbert, Johnny Gilbert, Brooks Hall, Taylor Hollen, and Topher Jones. The junior varsity girls' team had excellent performances with both Claire Edgley and Christine Livsey breaking 30 minutes. Derek Devine led the junior varsity boys' team in a time of 22:02 with Brendon Hovsepian-Kelly, Sam Jackson, Jackson Hannon, and Ben Friedman quick on his heels.
The Wahsatch Rendezvous was held one week later at the Cottonwood Complex. With thunderstorms looming overhead, Nathan Zick-Smith smoked the 2.9-mile course in 17:47 with Alexander Edgley finishing 10 seconds behind him. Freshman standouts Andy and Johnny Gilbert turned in strong performances once again while Brooks Hall, Topher Jones, Derek Devine, Jackson Hannon and Brendon Hovsepian-Kelly all had breakthrough races. Nels Ballard competed in his first race of the season and Ben Friedman ran a personal best time. For the girls' team, Christine Livsey led the way in a time of 26.21 withClaire Edgley following closely behind. It is hard to believe that we are halfway through the cross-country season. Our next meet is the Orem Kiwanis Invitational on Saturday, October 4. Please come to cheer on your Rowland Hall harriers as they continue to improve with each new stride this season. Volleyball Team On a Roll
By Head Coach Kendra Tomsic
After finishing the pre-season 3-1 and then losing only one match at the St. Joe Jayhawk Invitational for a third place finish, the Winged Lion volleyball team began Region 14 play on September 18.
At Layton Christian Academy, the RHSM team started slow and lost the first two sets 23-25, 20-25. The team returned to form the third set, dominating the Eagles to take the game 25-11; however, serving woes struck again in the fourth set and the Winged Lions lost it 18-25 and so lost the match 3-1.
The team bounced back from the LCA loss, defeating South Summit in what turned out to be an exciting home contest on September 23 during Spirit Week. The RHSM squad initially took control of the match, winning the first two sets 25-9 and 25-13. The Wildcats came back to life in the third game, however, taking it 22-25. The Winged Lions showed much heart and tenacity in game four, overcoming a 24-21 deficit to win the set by a score of 27-25, thus winning the match 3-1.
The team traveled to Juab on September 25, hosted North Summit at home on September 30, and played at American Leadership on October 1, hoping to improve their 1-1 league record.
Remaining home matches include Layton Christian on October 7, Juab on October 14, and ALA on October 23. Come out and catch some exciting volleyball action in the Den!
